Abstract:

Research in behavioral neuroscience launches off of two basic assumptions - all animals are sentient, and movement is thought.

A founding assumption of neuroscience as a field is that the neuron is a fundamental unit of all nervous systems; thus, any animal that utilizes neuron-to-neuron communication as part of their behavioral control system uses, at some level, the same "information currency". As such, neuroscience experiments with non-human animals assume that other species can experience feelings similar to those felt by humans - we are all part of an evolutionary continuum, in which our interpretations of reality are "shades" of the same picture.

While there are many unanswered questions about the function and development of the brain, it is clear from an evolutionary perspective that nervous systems are fundamental for the movement of multi-cellular organisms. An extremely relevant measure of brain health is how well its body can interact with its environment, as judged by observations of behavior. Because purely observational measures are often very subtle and complex, especially in environments outside of the laboratory, this research framework requires innovations upon more traditional tools and methods of neuroscientific inquiry.
